The Chamber of Business and Industry of Centre County is touting a “significant investment” in Centre County's economy amid the celebration of the grand opening of the GIANT Company's grocery store in Bellefonte, Pa.
The GIANT store anchors the Benner Pike Mall – a brand-new shopping center that will be home to several businesses, including a retail building and restaurant.
Plans for the project began in 2020, when Pennsylvania-based Land of Paradise LLC entered into an agreement to acquire the 15-acre parcel of formerly untaxed state-owned land that was once part of the State Correctional Institution at Rockview.
The Chamber was instrumental in facilitating the land transfer from the state through its legal arm for economic development – the Centre County Industrial Development Corporation (CCIDC).
“The shopping center represents a significant investment in Centre County’s economy and is consistent with the Chamber’s work to stimulate smart growth, and to create jobs and tax revenue for Centre County and the region," said Greg Scott, Chamber president and CEO. “The project will provide exciting new shopping options in Bellefonte and a minimum of 100 full- and part-time jobs.”
The Benner Township supermarket is among three GIANT stores in Centre County. The Ferguson Township GIANT along N. Atherton Street opened in 1989. The GIANT store on S. Atherton Street opened in 2019, after relocating from the Nittany Commons Mall.
“At The GIANT Company, we are a neighborhood grocery store, but we are also members of the communities we serve,” said interim GIANT Company President John Ruane in a statement. “The opening of our Benner Township GIANT builds on our legacy of serving the State College community for more than 30 years, offering families convenience, meal solutions, and savings to meet their lifestyles.”
The GIANT store in Bellefonte will operate from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.
Founded in 1923, The Giant Company family of brands includes Giant, Martin’s, Giant Heirloom Market, Giant Direct and Martin’s Direct.
